Mexican president apologises to Mayan people, a month before elections

Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has apologized to the indigenous Mayan people for abuses committed against them over the five centuries since the Spanish conquest. Obrador focused on the 1847-1901 Caste War revolt. However, the timing of the apology has been met with skepticism, since it comes a month before vital legislative and municipal elections.

Even if we ignore timing, why though? Are you those Spaniards? Are you personally committing crimes towards those groups? Then what exactly is he apologising for? Apology only makes sense if you did something or omitted to do something, when you had agency. Otherwise being sorry will lose it's meaning...

Apologize to the civilization that would sacrifice hundreds of people and rip out their still beating heart. What's wrong with this guy.
