Will respond against US tariffs in due course, says EU trade chief

The trade chief of the European Union, Cecilia Malmstrom said on Friday that the EU would respond to US tariffs in due course of time. Ms. Malmstrom said that the EU would impose retaliatory tariffs after engaging in a dispute with the US at the WTO over aircraft subsidies.

So the EU loses in the WTO and simply says "whatever"? When Bush lost his fight over steel and aluminum tariffs in 2004-05 the duties were eliminated. This is why we need to re-prioritize trade relations. We need to return to preferential tariffs for nations that will play fair.

Interesting, I wonder if the US will dispute those retaliatory tariffs with the WTO as well. If the WTO decides that the EU is violating its rulings it can, and has demonstrated unflinching willingness to, enforce its rulings using sanctions on trade and international lending to the offending party. Notably, these sanctions aren't just for one country but for all member countries (which is pretty much everyone) so they would be universally enforceable.
