Northern California faces second round of power shutoffs in two weeks

Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. has begun to cut power to about 450,000 people in parts of Northern California to avoid the risk of sparking wildfires. The Company said on Wednesday that the shutoffs would begin around 2 pm in the Sierra foothills, followed soon after by blackouts north of the San Francisco Bay Area. The power will be cut to portions of 17 counties, and last about 48 hours.

Half-a-million people without power is a lot. It's like a 3rd world country or something....

PG&E: "Hey dickbreath consumer, tonight we're shutting off your power for up to two days, even though you're not technically in a fire-risk area. Power lines might snap if the wind is too blowy, might cause a fire 'cuz it's so dry." Consumer: "Hey this is a pain in the ass, is there any way that maybe we could avoid this?" PG&E: "Fuck you, we've got another unplanned outage planned for later this month. Maybe if the climate wasn't changing so hard it wouldn't be so dry."

The public utilities commission regulates PG&E.. Purge than their operational safety and distribution engineering. It's nice that a regulated utility can donate money to campaigns so the politicians will protect them from real regulation.

This is what happens when people demand "something" to be done, without realizing that there isnt alot that can be done and that anything that could be done, takes a long time to build and wouldnt be a cure all to the problem anyway.
