The incident has triggered animal welfare activists, calling for action on a policy change. 18-year-old Kanakota collapsed and died in the town of Sigiriya after giving three tourist rides and walking in a parade the day prior. Elephants walk a lot. The issue isn’t the tourists or the parade, but the treatment of the animal between these events.
