Indiana teachers pack statehouse to demand higher pay

Teachers in Indiana gathered outside the State Capitol building on Tuesday in protest of low salaries and evaluation policies. The Indiana State Teachers Association has said it expected to draw some 15,000 teachers. Indiana teachers make an average of $51,000 a year, at the bottom third of U.S. states for teachers’ pay.

The average public school teacher in the US makes $60,483 a year. They also work only 181 days a year, as opposed to the average of 254 for other jobs. So when you math it out, they would be making $84,877 per year if they worked as much as regular folk. They also generally tend to have much better benefits packages, as they are state employees. Now factor in the fact that 2/3 of American school children can not read, write, or do math at grade level by grade 8, and one has to question why they think they deserve a raise at all?

I agree with what the teachers are pushing for. Teachers are far less respected in todays world. I don't know about everyone else's teachers growing up but mine were treated as an extension of parenthood and respected as such.
