South African prosecutor dies after gun accidentally discharges in courtroom

A South African lawyer was shot dead in court on Monday by a weapon being presented as evidence. Addelaid Ferreira Watt, 51, was killed after the gun on display fell and fired a round in her direction in the Ixopo regional court. The weapon was purported evidence in a home robbery case. The lawyer was shot in the left side of the hip and brought to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

You would think someone would have bothered to examine and unload the firearm before bringing it into a courtroom, bad luck.

Literally firearm safety rule #1: Treat every gun as if it were loaded.

Wtf...do they not check to see if its loaded before bringing it to a courtroom??? And how did she die from a shot to the hip? Are they still using shamanistic healers or something?

This reminds me of the story of a defence lawyer attempting to prove his client was innocent of murder, by showing how the victim could have accidentally killed himself with the gun. He then accidentally kills himself with the gun during the demonstration and the defendant is found not guilty and freed.

I don’t care if it’s tagged as evidence, never do shit like that. Courtroom antics can kill.
