Worker who raised red flag in New Orleans hotel collapse is due to be deported

A Honduran construction worker, injured in last month’s deadly partial collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans, is expected to be deported on Monday. Delmer Joel Ramirez Palma was arrested by immigration agents two days after the incident. Palma’s attorneys say that he was outspoken about the unsafe conditions at the hotel, and deporting him could impact an investigation.

don't enter illegally.. glad he did what he did... but that doesn't absolve him of previous actions nor consequences

Guess he should have entered legally, then he wouldn't be getting deported. The responsibility for this situation is his own and the construction accident does not mitigate it.

When are they going to arrest the employers ?

If they’re going to deport him, at least arrest the employers for hiring illegals.

Interesting case. He most definitely should face some consequences for staying illegally, however it did take bravery to blow the whistle on unsafe work conditions especially considering he probably was aware of exposing his illegal status. We definitely wouldn’t want to scare away future whistle blowers in the future. And considering he’s now a critical witness in an investigation, I’m sure he could be given temporary status. The biggest concern about the case I see is the construction site having apparently more than one illegal working there.. coupled with the unsafe work conditions that led to an accident where people were injured.. that I think is the real story here.

All employers should be required to check the citzenship status of people they're hiring, and the non-citizens should be re-checked annually. If an employer has a staff member whose legality to work expired since the last annual check, there should be no punishment for them. If an employer doesn't do the check on time, or at all, and they hire an illegal, then the employer should be fined/charged depending upon the circumstance.

where does it say he entered illegally? been in New Orleans area for almost 20 years. been working on deferring deportation in attempt to stay. (tap for more) they knew who he was and where he was before this but only go after him after this accident? something fishy here

Unfortunate situation but the LAW is the LAW.

Employers need to have their be a risk of hiring illegal people and exposing them to such conditions. As long as their is no consequence this will continue to happen.

So a guy saves people, and gets deported. Yet dudes in a ton of bullshit sanctuary cities can murder people and stay? Seems a bit one sided even though I'm against illegal aliens any way you cut it.

I think if an exception is made here we could in the future see illegals creat bad situations then blow the whistle and say I'm a good guy I get to stay. For this person thank him maybe give him a cash reward and maybe even a first class ticket back to his original home country. Oh yeah arrest the ones who hired him from the foreman to the CEO.

Well if he wasn't here illegally he probably wouldn't have gotten hurt that way.

Gee no one else could have done it, I'm certain the multi-generational american that should have had that job could have done exactly that.

He shouldn't be deported. He should be DETAINED until it's determined that he's no longer useful to the investigation and prosecution (if it goes that far), THEN he should be deported and red flagged to prevent future admission into this country. Illegal aliens should ALL be deported and red flagged.

Eh, I feel that an exception could be made considering the lives he saved. For instance, if you enter illegally and stop an active shooter I think you should get a few passes. Of course he should meet the requirements but we should help him with the process.
