Governments using social media to manipulate elections, spy on citizens

A report on online freedom by the Washington based non-profit group Freedom House claims governments around the world are increasingly using social media to manipulate elections. The group added it found evidence of ’advanced social media surveillance programs’ meant to spy on their citizens in at least 40 of 65 countries analyzed. Global internet freedom declined for the ninth consecutive year.

Some insights into the report: Most free: Iceland, Estonia, Canada, Germany, Australia. Least free: China is "the world’s worst abuser of internet freedom," followed by Iran, Syria, Cuba and Vietnam. The U.S. has long been a bastion of internet freedom and still ranks sixth out of 65 countries assessed, but its status has fallen each of the past three years.

I'm not surprised at all. Social media is a cancer in our societies.

Not only govts. Companies, gangs, hackers, etc. IOW, everyone who wants and can. It's the price we're paying for: 1. "Free" apps & services, where the product is you, the customer. 2. Businesses driven by being first to market, not quality, security or transparency. Equifax says hello.

I find it absolutely hilarious that Germany is listed higher on the list than the U.S. as free.. but literally by court mandate is scrubbing internet search results of a convicted murderer because he won the right to not have his name searchable anymore.. that doesn't sound to "free" to me if the government is able to mandate manipulation of "free exchange of ideas" now does it? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50579297
