Trump signs law backing Hong Kong protesters

President Trump Wednesday signed two bills aimed at supporting pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. The Human Rights and Democracy Act mandates an annual review, to check if Hong Kong has enough autonomy to justify its special status with the US. The president also signed a second bill, which bans the export of crowd-control munitions to Hong Kong.

For those who don’t read the articles or don’t understand why Congress would present a law to the president for signature, understand that having a good relationship with the U.S. affects the economy of the country wishing to trade with the U.S. “The legislation also requires the State Department’s annual certification to Congress that Hong Kong is ‘upholding the rule of law and protecting rights’ before continuing the city’s special relationship with the U.S.” Note that CONGRESS passed this and the president simply signed it. Sounds mighty bipartisan, something all Americans should find impressive in this current climate.
