Iraqi prime minister says he will resign

Iraqi PM Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Friday he would offer his resignation to parliament to allow lawmakers to choose a new government. The move comes following weeks of violent anti-government protests. Abdul Mahdi’s decision came in response to a call for a change of leadership on Friday by Iraq’s top Shi’ite Muslim cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

Doesn't really matter. The PM in Iraq is the head of state; a figure head.

Why is religion so involved in government? Everyone: Protests and anger Leaders: Nothing Priest(or equiv): I think there should be a change Leaders: *step down and offer their heads*. I understand the intrinsic value of Religion in some cultures, and why it's so involved in state. But why is the word of religion (1 individual) more important than the word of the people, regarding politics, especially when dictatorship is considered so bad?
