US mountain climber Brad Gobright dies after fall in Mexico

American free solo climber, Brad Gobright, 31, has died attempting to descend the side of El Portero Chico in northern Mexico Wednesday. Gobright fell around 300 meters to his death from the cliff. His companion, Aidan Jacobson, fell a shorter distance and survived with injuries. Gobright was best known for free soloing or climbing without any safety gear, but at the time the two were abseiling.

No disrespect for the climber, but free-climbing is a suicide wish. People will say, "Oh, but it was a terrible, unforeseen accident!" No, someone willing to take recklessly unnecessary and foolish risks like that will always eventually get what's coming to them. The risk of death is severe, and the probability of making a mistake free-climbing is high, so that's not "unforseen" in the slightest bit. That's a stupid way to experience rock climbing. He didn't deserve it, but his choices deserved it for him, and he paid with his life.
