Nearly 700,000 Americans to lose food stamps under new Trump policy

Nearly 700,000 Americans will lose their access to food stamps under new rules formalized by the Trump administration. The proposal will see a tightening of work requirements for recipients and removes individual states’ discretion to waive those rules for people in desperate need of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The change would save roughly $5.5bn over five years.

If you want to feed the hungry then get cooking and feed them, bring them a sandwich, invite them to dinner, bring them groceries, take them to lunch. If you just want to feel better by voting to give taxpayer money to others because they meet the paper requirements of some soulless system, shove off.

I wonder how economical it would be to reform TEFAP in order to provide any citizen who wants it a nutritional but VERY basic, bland, and standardized MRE style daily food ration then if people want to eat higher quality food of their own choosing they can buy it themselves as usual. I'm all for disincentiving people from indefinitely living off economical assistance that provides them with anything which could be construed as nonessential but with all advances in food production we've made one would think providing every US citizen with a basic level of nutrition would be beneficial in that it would potentially lower medical costs and increase productivity among low income citizens.

For whatever its worth, the proposed program is going to save $1.1 billion/year, which is only about .025% of what the US government spent in 2019.

There is nothing wrong with moving working people off food stamps who no longer qualify for the assistance. 36 million Americans on food stamps is a terrible thing to be satisfied with. It's great that the Trump economy has dropped unemployment to lows and allowed some to get off this assistance. Now we just need to get 35 million more off.

I retired from the grocery business in California and it’s a total joke. You could always tell the people on food stamps because their carts were full of soda pop chips candy and steak.

the rule is, if you are able body, have no dependents, you have to work, go to school or volunteer. I am sick that people who can work, don't and get food stamps.

Though I'm usually against changes like this, after doing some research on the topic and learning of the rampant abuse of food stamps, this is probably for the best. I do believe that if some regulations were put in place abuse can be put to a stop and would be more effective, but a solution is better than no solution.

Eh... $5.5bn is roughly $40 per taxpayer per year, average. I don't mind paying that, but whatever.

I wish I could get someone to pay for my food so long as I work 2-1/2 work days a week.
