Venice tide barriers pass test

Venice recently tested and declared a success, a barrier designed to relieve the city’s perennial flooding. This is part of a plan to protect the city - it involves some or all of the 78 barriers to be raised some day when the sea rises more than 110 centimeters, to prevent damaging high tides. Estimated at $2 bn, the project has so far cost $6.08 bn and is running a decade behind schedule.
