Twitter plans to build a ’decentralized standard’ for social networks

Twitter plans to set up an independent research group to create an ’open and decentralized’ standard for social networks. As per CEO Jack Dorsey, the system would not be owned by any single private company, and would enable individuals to use a variety of services to access the same network. Dorsey hopes social media networks will operate more like email.

You had your chance. Fix the dumpster fire of a social network you have now, Jack.

I think he’s genuinely doing this. The guy’s into crypto, blockchain, bitcoin, etc. and I suspect he’s probably not as much into Twitter as a lock-in platform. This initiative has promise and I’ll support it as a way to return power to the individual. There have been a lot of people working on aspects of the personal control of data problem and this is in that sphere. The real trick will be how fast they can get to agreement, followed by working code. That will make the standard stick. Possibly.

Let the socalist media publishers and their communist management teams go bankrupt. Time for these Advertising companies to be replaced with market forces that do not have a cultural marxist agenda to control the very spring wells of thought and creativity. Help send socalist media to their demise by not using their products or services. Seek out the free speech platforms and put your content, thoughts and musings there. protect your privacy and use the products that do not track.

I don't trust Jack Dorsey on this one. Twitter has every incentive to keep its thumb inside BlueSky. Urbit doesn't exactly deal with social media, it deals instead with personal servers or whatnot (I am honestly not quite even sure what Urbit can do in its entirety, I have not made an Urbit). I trust the creators of Urbit, though, when they say they aim in the future to detach control of Urbit, a LOT more than I do with Dorsey and BlueSky. This link might not work on something like a smartphone; try using a desktop for this link to the Urbit site. https://urbit.org/
