SEC proposed new standards for accredited investors

The SEC proposed new rules for who is considered an accredited investor (and therefore allowed to purchase non-public stock). It voted that Indian Tribes and Family Funds with more than $5M, as well as people who pass an independent certification test, be allowed to buy and sell stock in private companies, in addition to currently qualified investors. The proposal is now open for public comment.
