French telco Orange and ex-CEO found guilty over workers’ suicides

French telecoms group Orange and its former CEO Didier Lombard has been found guilty of ’moral harassment’ that prompted a spate of suicides during a restructuring at the company in the late 2000s. The court sentenced Lombard to a year in jail, of which eight months will be suspended, and a fine. However, since that term is under two years Lombard will not spend time behind bars.

Reuters said "its going shake the business" are you kidding me... They're a telecom company. Ole boy got fined 16,000 usd and the company 75,000. That ain't shit. They crap that out.

I'm not familiar with this case, but I read the Reuters article and it seems like this man is being used as a scapegoat because he was ceo when the company was restructuring amidst the recession of 2008. A lot of people lost their jobs, which made them commit suicide. I'd be happy to hear other (more informed) opinions though. Why is he responsible? What did he do that another Ceo wouldn't be required to do?
