Cuba appoints first prime minister in decades

Tourism minister Manuel Marrero Cruz has been appointed as Cuba’s first PM in more than 40 years. The post of prime minister was scrapped in 1976 by Fidel Castro. It was reinstated earlier this year under the rules of a new constitution. Critics, however, say this is a purely cosmetic appointment as the Cuban Communist Party and the military remain the decision-making institutions on the island.
