Virginia lawmakers ask governor to remove Robert E. Lee statue from US Capitol

Two Virginia Democrats are calling on the state’s governor to remove Virginia’s Confederate General Robert E. Lee statue from the U.S. Capitol. Jennifer Wexton and A. Donald McEachin said there are ’countless’ other choices to represent Virginia, and that the statue aims to ’rewrite Lee’s reputation from that of a cruel slave owner and Confederate General to portraying him as a kind man’.

Instead of subtracting from history, why don't they add to it? So instead of removing Lee's statue, add the other statues and tell the whole story from all perspectives.

Gov had better tell them to go pound sand.

My there is a lot of misinformation here. Let's talk about the man himself. Robert E Lee saw slavery, as an institution, as an evil not worth defending. He also was offered to fight for the north as the Unions General over Grant. The reason he said no and resigned was because accepting that job would mean waging war on his own kin. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/lee-resigns-from-u-s-army While he despised slavery as an institution, he also understood that the best thing for the slaves would be to remain in the US and be slowly integrated into the nation s citizenry over shipping them back to Africa. This wasn't just a statement on Africa, but also an acknowledgement of the fact that most slaves had never seen Africa, and would not be equipped to survive in such an environment. https://civilwarhome.com/leepierce.htm To summarize, Lee was a man who was a loyal Patriot, who didn't agree with splitting the union and hated slavery. However, he was also unwilling to wage war against his kin and his hometown, and when he was forced to take a side he chose his family. That kind of loyalty is admirable, and should be expressed by this statue in some way to better enlighten people to it's context. It's really sad how such a rich history has failed to be taught over in Virginia, and I think the appropriate response should be education, not pandering to an already ignorant population to remove one of the few reminders remaining of their history.

I'm sure the Italians would be all for tearing down statues of Julius Caesar a well known slave owner and murderer

Ultimately they want to erase all history, burn all books about the past, and then start from scratch with a new invented history from fairy tales (We wuz Kangs and shite). And it is not the first time this happens in human history. We know almost nothing from pre-islamic Arabia, because the Muslims erased their history. Some centuries earlier the Christians did the same, and the only allowed book about the history of antiquity was the bible. Any archaeological discoveries had to fit into the biblical timeline, because all prechristian libraries had been destroyed and burned. It is a cyclical amnesia of the human race.

I would think that Virginia's two statues at the Capitol Building would be George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Maybe not the most creative choices but name two Virginians who did more for the country.

If your not black n descent from slaves it's easy to think you are getting a raw deal....the state was made great not because of Robert e Lee... His statue at best belongs on Arlington property.. A great reminder there is a cost of for breaking from the republic.. In fact it cost him the farm. N became Arlington cemetery.

Yes, let's get rid of statues of losers and traitors, and if confederate lowlifes have a problem with it, I would welcome another civil war to show those bastards what it feels like to lose again
