Facebook account needed for Messenger now

In order to sign up for Facebook Messenger, users will now need to have a Facebook account. Earlier, the social network allowed people to sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account using phone numbers, photos, and names as acceptable forms of logging in. However, the new procedure will only apply to those new to the app. However, some have claimed that their accounts have been restricted.

You could use something else, like WhatsApp (still owned by FB), FaceTime or whatever Android has. It's not the end of the world.
