Amazon wants to patent device that IDs shoppers by their hand

Amazon has filed a patent for technology that could identify people by scanning the wrinkles in the palm of their hand and using a light to see blood vessels beneath the skin. The resulting images could be used to identify users as a shopper at Amazon Go stores.

Retailers desperately want to make shopping as easy and convenient as possible in order to remove as many barriers to impulse spending as they can. You would be surprised (maybe dismayed) to find out how many retailers have similar patents, technology, or plans to do so. Safeway groceries was very interested in using the phones of shoppers to track their location; they wanted to offer discounts to the shopper based on the isle they were in at the time. That was about 6 or 7 years ago.

What a weird meeting that must have been to decide to do that. "Ok, let's brainstorm for ways to identify people so they can buy our stuff."
