New Russian weapon can travel 27 times the speed of sound

As per reports, Russia’s new intercontinental weapon that became operations Friday can fly 27 times the speed of sound. President Putin has described the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle as a technological breakthrough. The Avangard is launched atop an intercontinental ballistic missile, but unlike a regular missile warhead it can make sharp maneuvers in the atmosphere en route to target.

Hypersonic weapons are awfully hard to defend against, let alone detect...

Space Force is our best chance at detecting these fuckers. Otherwise it can hit you before you even hear it.

The only difference between this weapon and a Minuteman 3 is that a Minuteman travels at mach 23, and cannot maneuver in air, but does have decoys, and multiple warheads. If this weapon is used for the Russian nuclear arsenal, (which in context, I assume it is) it makes no big difference as Mutually Assured Destruction would still deter the Russians from using the weapon. Even if the Russians got a first strike, American, British, and French warheads would rain down on their targets maybe a minute or two later.

Till they shoot one up and demonstrate it going 9km/s. And do some high speed maneuvers, I am going to be sceptical about it. How can it survive going into the atmosphere at that speed. How do all the vulnerable parts survive high g forces etc. Might use that atomic engine (probably) that exploded all over the place earlier this year Still I want to see before I believe.

as terrifying as this is in the hands of crazy people, the star trek nerd in me is excited as hell for it's application toward travel. strap that shit to a rocket and you can get off the planet FAST.

21+ thousand miles per hour, is that even safe in atmosphere?

I think the US focussed on nullifying these weapons with lasers, which are doing pretty well. I expect CIWS may be replaced / augmented with laser tech on ships which can supply the juice quite soon.
