Iraq’s outgoing prime minister says US troops must leave

Iraq’s outgoing prime minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi on Tuesday called for American troops to leave the country to avoid further tensions between the US and Iran. ’We have no exit but this, otherwise we are speeding toward confrontation,’ Abdul-Mahdi, who resigned in November said. He said the ’historic decision’ was necessary, ’otherwise we will not be taken seriously.’

So what actually happens to Iraq if the US (and all allies) totally leave?

I am more curious what the incoming Prime Minister says. If he says we have to leave then I guess we have to leave. The USA has no interest in claiming Iraq (like a certain other country seems to want to do) so although it will probably hurt Iraq in the long run we simply cannot justify staying in a sovereign country when the Democratically elected leaders of that country demand that we leave.
