Asian stocks rise ahead of US-China trade pact

Asian shares rose to new 19-month highs Monday ahead of the expected signing on Phase 1 China-US trade deal as investors shrugged off weaker-than-expected American jobs data. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was 0.47% higher, touching its highest point since June 2018. South Korea’s Kospi added 0.73% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.74%, while Taiwan shares added 0.6%.

So China agrees to buy almost 1/2 a trillion dollars worth of goods and energy from the US and the US agrees to lower _some_ tarrifs to half while keeping the rest as-is. China keeps its tarrifs fully in place and has "pledged" to strengthen intellectual property laws. I realize the last bit takes some time to do, but I really doubt China will make that change. This 2 year agreement seems like a breather from the tensions than anything else. The economic realities will be different by that point.
