America divided on the issue of abortion finds new poll

A new Marist poll found that Americans are divided on the issue of abortion. Just 16% of respondents want to keep abortion restrictions as-is under Roe v. Wade. 35% of Americans favor less restriction on abortion, while 39% of Americans favor additional restrictions. The poll also found an increase in those who self-identify as pro-choice: 57%, up from 47% in February.

The idea that a blastula is viable conscious human life seems pretty far-fetched to me. I’d be interested in seeing the scientific basis of saying that something that has a few cells is conscious. Stopping it’s development into a fetus hardly seems like “baby killing” to me. And when I hear people make such a claim I have difficulty agreeing with them. It seems to me that such claims must be based upon blind faith in a soul that is somehow magically deposited into the fertilized egg. That’s not science, that’s the opposite. That’s unverified faith in a story that another human told you. Supposedly valid because it came from God (another story that a human told you to believe.) “Life” doesn’t begin at birth—life never stopped. The sperm is alive, the egg is a living cell. We need better terminology than “life begins at birth”. If we give rights to a fertilized egg, then I wonder do we need to give rights to the food on the plate that in 24 hours will be chemically converted into the human’s body (with all the concomitant rights and protections)?
