London police deploys facial recognition

London’s Metropolitan Police Service has deployed live facial recognition (LFR) technology at key areas throughout the city. The efforts are part of the police to ’tackle serious crime’ and assurances have been made that any images obtained that don’t trigger a potential alert are deleted immediately. Critics have called the move ineffectual and unlawful.

The Nazis would have loved a system like this. Combined with 5G tracking capabilities, they could have rounded up every Jew in the country much easier.

a man was arrested for covering up his face with his jacket just because he didnt want to be watched. kinda sucks to think that the People will just let the government into every part of their lives and allow others to be arrested for wanting the government out of their life.

The UK police will not use this for actual crimes, it will be to locate people who are non-PC. :(

I thought facial recognition still struggles with people with facial hair and dark skin? if growing a beard or shaving one off can throw the system why the hell would you use tax payer money for it?

The problem is: Most criminals cover their faces.

So Britain is doing something to look tough on crime but will accomplish little and likely just be used to harass people who say non PC things? Makes me glad I don't live in London.

It's already been proven that AI is racist, because it thinks all black people are the same.....and in london, well let's just say that the AI will think theres a hand full of people in the whole of london.

They fill London with immigrants and massively increase the criminal population, and then we have to put up with this infringement of our liberties because police are too busy monitoring us online for saying the wrong thing. Why didn't they listen to us in the first place then they wouldn't have this problem?

they installed tons of cameras, but the crime just increased. they need actual police on the ground. just watching is not going to fix anything.

What's the point? As an Englishman I think this is a waste of tax payer money, all the recent terrorist attacks were carried out by people on terror watch lists, and the government could still do fuck all to prevent them

I would have no problem with this if the governments definition of crime was the same as most people's. but what is to stop them from using it against people who's opinions they don't like, or who have said something wrong on Twitter. Until the government has its definition of crime sorted this sort of surveillance should be resisted.

This is unfortunate.
