New Zealand PM Ardern calls national election on September 19

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called for a general election to be held on Sept. 19. Ardern is seeking a second term in office and is expected to face tough competition from conservative challenger Simon Bridges. Voters will also decide on two contentious social issues in referendums on the same date: legalizing euthanasia, and legalizing recreational marijuana.
