States sue to have the Equal Rights Amendment adopted despite deadline long past

The Attorney’s General of Virginia, Illinois and Nevada are bringing a lawsuit seeking to have the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) adopted. Congress passed the ERA in 1972 but set a deadline of 1982 for ratification. Only 35 states had approved it by 1982 of the 38 needed. Recently, Virginia, Illinois and Nevada passed the ERA and their AGs are suing that it should be ratified despite the deadline.

If the ERA is implemented I only see it creating inequality for men. Its 2020 women have the same rights as men and have had them for nearly 40 years.

Just supposing the deadline had not expired 38 years ago, what would actually change if this got ratified or archived or whatever they are trying to make happen?

Yeah that's not how laws work, or the courts for that matter. They can't pass legislation from the bench.
