UK’s departure from the EU leaves a US$13 billion gap in the bloc’s budget

With Britain leaving the European Union on Friday, Jan 31, the bloc of 27 countries loses the second-biggest net contributor to its finances. Under a mutually agreed transition period, the UK will contribute to the EU budget this year, but British lawmakers will no longer sit in the European Parliament or help shape EU rules. The UK joined the EU in 1973, when it was the European Communities.
