UK’s Johnson to impose full customs checks on goods from EU

Boris Johnson is preparing to impose full customs and border checks on all EU goods entering Britain from next year. Such a dramatic change in policy is seen as a hardening of position to gain leverage in upcoming negotiations for a free trade agreement with EU. British negotiators hope that threats of tougher checks if a deal is not agreed could make the EU more willing to agree to their terms.

Power move. "We think customs checks are a great idea, change our minds". Or "how much will you give us to not do this?"

Not sure how I feel about this one. We do not have the infrastructure or logistics in place to check the sheer volume of stuff moving between the UK and mainland Europe. I've made the trip across (ferry) every year for the past 10 or so years, and even when it's: quiet, and half of the booths don't check you, it still takes a good half hour to get through. If they stop you for a check, it could take an hour (and more on occasion). If you try that for the phenomenal amount of traffic going both ways, you practically need an army, if you don't want to backlog the traffic.

Negotiating position, that's all. As already mentioned here by others, the reality of full border checks at Dover & the Eurotunnel would bring the UK economy grinding to a halt, such is the volume of trade & goods through them. Not an enticing prospect at all, for either side, but worse for us. Ultimately definitely in the interests of both sides to sort out a deal though.
