UK plans to bring forward ban on new petrol and diesel cars

Britain has launched a plan to ban the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars from 2035, five years earlier than planned. The move comes as PM Johnson is seeking to elevate the UK’s environmental credentials after he sacked the head of a Glasgow UN Climate Change Conference planned for November. ’We know as a country, as a society, as a planet, as a species, we must now act’, Boris stressed.

The amount of lithium needed to produce all the batterys for electric cars need for the UK currently stands at 75% of the worlds reserves and rising, and that's not to include the round the world trip these batterys will require of replacement every 10 years. Its. Not. Possible.

That won't work. Changing all public transport to electric by 2035? Maybe. But banning the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by then? The technology isn't there, it would just cripple our economy for no reason other than "we had to do something". Doing something doesn't mean you're doing the right thing. Change all public transport to electric. Build more nuclear power plants. Gradually transfer Britain over from coal and gas power stations to solar, wind, wave and nuclear power. Give tax incentives to haulage companies to change over to electric or at least LPG trucks. By around 2050 the technology may have developed to make electric cars more readily available to the public, so you can start to push the change to electric cars with private owners. When over 80% of the public are driving electric cars, probably around 2080 *then* you can outright ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles. The second hand market will eventually kill off the rest of the petrol and diesel vehicles over time as they break down. By around 2130 fossil fuels will be gone in Britain outside of shows and races.

At the very least, this is giving companies 15 years to gear up to serve this market.
