Astronomers discover dead ’monster’ galaxy lurking in deep space

Scientists have discovered a ’monster’ galaxy that existed about 12 billion years ago when the universe was 1.8 billion years old. Researchers found that the galaxy (named XMM-2599), which formed stars at a high rate and then died. It is not known why it suddenly stopped forming stars. The research team found the galaxy formed more than 1,000 solar masses a year in stars at its peak of activity.
