Florida Congressman files ethics complaint after Pelosi rips up Trump speech

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) tweeted that he filed an ethics complaint against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after she ripped up a transcript of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address and said she may have broken the law. He cited a statute related to court records. He also said it was deeply offensive and a flagrant violation of House ethics.

Whether or not anything comes from this, putting a spotlight on Pelosi's unprofessional, childish behavior seems like a necessary thing. Our elected representatives should aspire to be good examples when the entire nation is watching them.

From Snopes: Jonathan Turley, a professor at the George Washington University Law School who also served as a Republican witness during a congressional hearing on President Trump’s impeachment, said that Pelosi “demolished decades of tradition” when she tore up Trump’s speech. Turley also criticized Pelosi for destroying a historic document. However, Turley agreed that this was not a violation of 18 U.S.C. §2071: "That last act (tearing her copy of the speech) has led some to allege that she also violated 18 U.S.C. §2071 in the destruction of an official document. That claim is dubious and should not take away from the more serious question of Pelosi violating her duty to remain a neutral representative of the whole house and not just a partisan member or worse a political troll… The main problem is that I am not convinced that this is a covered document. The law does not prevent the destruction of any government document in any form. If so, we would have nothing but warehouses from sea to sea. I cannot find any source that stipulates the preservation of this document or even requires that it be given to the Speaker. The Constitution speaks of the address being given, not copies bestowed. Frankly, I was a bit surprised because the Speaker’s copy is a historic document of significance. It should be preserved as part of the history of the House. It is also “official” in the sense that it is the symbol of the President completing his constitutional obligation to Congress. Yet, it is not list as an official document for custodial or preservation purposes."

Pelosi tearing up the papers was 'techniquely' illegal [destruction of government documents], but I think it would be extremely petty if any Republic really went through with pushing for a criminal charge. Not to mention it would probably look bad. I don't know enough about house proceedings to weigh in on the ethics complaint though. Edit: spelling

That old rotting zombie shouldn't be punished by criminal courts. The amount of dmg she did to herself and the Democrats in general is punishment enough for trashing a copy. Plus it would just make the Republicans look pretty if they pushed for charges. If the state prosecutor wants to bring charges against her without any Republicans pushing for it that's up to them.

Trump should pardon her and do so live on tv with the world's largest shit-eating grin.

The document was not a government document. Destruction of government documents refers to official documents which this was not in any shape or form. Once this ‘copy’ of the official document was handed to her, it became her property. There is no requirement for her to retain it or preserve it. Keep in mind that initially, President Trump in his official capacity as President, refused to shake her extended hand to him prior to his speech, which is and has always been the official proper procedure before the State of the Union speech.

Let's keeping putting off the people's business for one upmanship parlor games and frat house tactics.. Who needs infrastructure or oversight on health care anyway

We all know she hates Trump with the fury of 1000 suns. I think Trump just sees her as a corrupt old hag. Like he said when he ran for office he has been greasing their palms for decades when they called on him for donations. She is the same washed up hag she was 15 years ago only now more people pay attention because she thinks she is above the law.

Her smirking, sneering, shuffling papers and the finale of tearing up the speech only showed how 8th grade she is and it turned off many people who otherwise might have supported a Democrat. My wife, who is apolitical and doesn't get involved at all, was incensed at the behavior and found the Democrats sitting for reports of good news for our nation to be revolting.
