Trump slashes foreign aid, cuts safety net programs in new budget proposal

President Trump announced a $4.8T budget proposal that proposes reductions in social-safety-net programs and foreign aid and higher outlays for defense. The plan would increase military spending 0.3%, and lower nondefense spending by 5%. The plan will request $2B to complete the border wall and substantially boost funding for NASA. The budget plan is unlikely to pass in the Dems-controlled House.

It's a good start but no where near enough. A $4.8T budget is still ridiculously high. Our current operating debt is at what? 23...24 trillion? Our debt is getting so high that even with unrestricted printing of money (and thusly increasing inflation) that we are heading towards defaulting on our loans and if that happens our nation will have similar problems to what Europe had to deal with after WW2. Look it up, it's wasn't pretty.

It's a start but still way more than the US brings in from tax every year, and the US will still be running a significant deficit as well.

i guess the silver lining is more money for NASA, except Trump probably expects them to make him a Death Star or something

The best info I could get, without looking harder, was for 2017. Just to keep some perspective. $4.147 Trillion in expenditures was requested. $3.982 Trillion was actually spent. That's 20% of the GDP The deficit ran $665 Billion or 3.5% of the GDP The total GDP having been $19.177 trillion. That year the US spent $46 Billion is foreign aid. $38.5% went to just 10 countries. Afghanistan ($4.89 billion) Iraq ($3.36 billion) Israel ($3.18 billion) Jordan ($1.38 billion) Ethiopia ($943 million) South Sudan ($922 million) Kenya ($899 million) Pakistan ($892 million) Nigeria ($644 million) Uganda ($608 million) Social Security by contrast was just over $1 Trillion Medicare $709.4 Billion Medicaid $592.2 Billion Department of State $27 Billion Department of Justice $30 Billion Department of Homeland Security $50 Billion NASA $19.5 Billion Total budget of all military branches for Fiscal year 2017 $582 Billion So while the foreign aid we spend is a lot, by the rest of the budget it's really not. Some of this aid is military, some is direct food or others goods. For instance people complain about the amount of money spent on Israel. While the vast majority of the expenditures are military, since every single neighbor the counter has, had at one time or another threatened to kill each and citizen of their country, not all is. Some is in food and direct aid for Palestinians. Between the US, the UK, and Israel a vast majority of any aid they get is through these expenditures.

I don't agree with this. Societies need safety nets for the people who hit hard times, so they don't end up on the streets. Also increasing America's defence budget when it's already more than the next 15 countries combined? I thought America was going to less wars, surely it should be decreasing the defence budget, maybe giving some of that money to disabled veterans, who suddenly lose all of that money once they get home.

How many children, beautiful little innocent babies would be effected by social program cuts? Republicans are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. They will fight to end abortion then when a struggling mother cant feed her kids the attitude becomes, fend for yourself. Real nice. 🙄

What happens to people who are disabled, lost their home and savings from 2008 and about to retire. I know I’m not listing all the scenarios but just wondering what happens to the people who depend on the social safety net programs.
