Philippines announces plan to back out of US military defense alliance

The Philippines notified the US on Tuesday it would end a security pact allowing American forces to train in the country. The US Embassy in Manila acknowledged receipt of the notice. Signed in 1998, the VFA regulates the entry of US warships, aircraft and soldiers into the Philippines. The agreement will be terminated in 180 days unless both sides can negotiate a way to keep it.
