The novel coronavirus is now officially designated as COVID-19

The WHO has declared the official name for the novel coronavirus: COVID-19. The abbreviation COVID expands as ’CO’ for ’corona’, ’VI’ for ’virus’ and ’D’ for ’disease’. The organization said it had to find a name ’that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people’.

They should have just said it was a formulaic naming scheme, the part about carefully naming it to avoid a stigma against a region, people, etc just makes you think "wut"... Does this mean that they're going to rename every disease whose name refers to those kind of facts? Spanish flu, etc? No colloquial terms allowed?

They had to find a name which does not actually describe anything about the thing being named in order to prevent hurt feelings. Great job, WHO.

LOL. the WHO did a study group with the local university gender study class to craft an all exclusive designer name for this thing. It was a toss up between COVID-19 and Straight White Male Virus.

Heaven forbid we draw attention to the deeply oppressive regime or the highly dubious food prep practises that directly lead to a potential world plague. Let's worry about the feels instead.

Funny thing about the Spanish flu is it started in China. China is the cancer of humanity. They've never created a single thing good for mankind (compass was a discovery and malaria cure was never used.)
