YouTube removes video of Rand Paul reading whistleblower’s name on Senate floor

YouTube has removed a video from its platform that shows Sen. Rand Paul stating on the Senate floor the name of a person who some media outlets have suggested is the whistleblower whose complaint triggered the impeachment inquiry. YouTube said the video was removed because it violated their Community Guidelines. Paul, meanwhile, criticized the removal calling it a ’disturbing day in America’.

whatever the merits of rand paul's position on free speech, it's worth remembering that his ideology claims that: 1. the private sector is the best guarantor of freedom of speech. 2. there is no point at which wealth and market share prompt consideration of whether a private entity is acting de facto as a governing structure. statements like this are a bit disingenuous in light of his refusal to conduct oversight on youtube and other private entities.

You are the manager of a business. When you took over you kept many of the employees on despite some concerns about the way the previous management operated. You see some credible evidence that the previous assistant manager was using his role to shake down some suppliers for the benefit of his family. You ask the boss of one of those other businesses to look into an issue around supply quality which has hurt your business and during that discussion he offers to look into the shakedown claims. One of the original staff hears the discussion and talks to another who goes to associates of the former management who then start desperately trying to have you removed. Not a lot of opportunity to actually have you removed until your contract is up for renewal but plenty of opportunity to try and convince shareholders there is a problem. Mostly that looks to anybody without a strong loyalty to that prior management like an attempt to avoid any investigation of the alleged shakedowns happening under the prior management. An alleged shakedown with video evidence of the prior assistant manager bragging about the core of the allegations.

You mean the one with Eric Ciaramella? As in the one everyone says is the whistleblower even though we totally don't know who the whistleblower is? That Eric Ciaramella? As on the person who Trump's lawyers weren't allowed to question and whose testimony is under lock and key and to the point where you can only look at. That Eric Ciaramella?

What's the rush? They only left it up for two weeks - long enough for half a million views! I hope the ad revenues were worth risking that person's life.

Let's try a thought experiment. You're working for a company and your ex - girlfriend's father buys the company. He's the guy that told her to dump you. You hate his guts. Now, you're sitting in a conference call with multiple people including the new boss and he says "maybe we can kick back a few bucks to the customers who buy big orders?" Someone mentions "Oh boss, we can't do that. It would be illegal!" So he drops it and moves on to other business. But, you hate this guy's guts so bad, you go to a friend the FBI and tell them he's planning to provide illegal bribes to big customers. The FBI thinks "wow, this could be a big case!" But they found absolutely no evidence.

The whistleblower protection law doesn't protect him from fellow citizens, just from government back lash. Silly youtube. They'll have to assume responsibility for all their videos if they keep this up. Are you open source or not?
