UN warns of East Africa famine amid locust plague

The UN has warned that the East African region could be on the verge of a famine, threatened by swarms of locusts devouring crops and pasture. Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have been affected, with efforts to contain the infestation having proved ineffective. Estimates say the insects are breeding at such a pace that numbers could grow 500 times by June.
