Elusive rainbow snake spotted in Florida forest for first time since 1969

Two women hiking in Ocala Forest spotted a 4 feet long rainbow snake a month ago. The non-venomous Farancia erytrogramma has been spotted in Florida for the first time in over 50 years. Rainbow snakes are seldom seen because they hide among aquatic vegetation and burrow near creeks and marshes. Biologists believe the recent drawdown of the Rodman Reservoir forced this snake to leave its habitat.
