Several bodies believed to be covid victims wash up on the banks of the Ganges

Dozens of bodies believed to be Covid-19 victims have washed up on the banks of the Ganges River in northern India. Local officials said that about 40 corpses washed up in Buxar district near the border between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, two of India’s poorest states. Reports suggest the bodies were dumped because cremation sites were overwhelmed or relatives could not afford wood for funeral pyres.

They aiways have bodies in the river. India Released 25,000 Flesh-Eating Turtles Into the Ganges A plan to clean up corpses failed due to lack of planning https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/indias-government-once-released-25000-flesh-eating-turtles-ganges-river-180953384/

God this is so heartbreaking. I hope Biden can begin to give them more aid soon (and that their country would actually step up as well). All of these people once had hopes and dreams, passions, families. And now they’re just nameless bodies that were dumped because there’s too much death to keep up with. There’s no reason why this should be happening

To be fair, this wasn’t uncommon before Covid. Poor families would often crudely burn bodies then dump them unceremoniously because they couldn’t afford effective means. Now with Covid it isn’t surprising to see more desperate people trying to grieve their dead friends and family members. HOWEVER I do think it is pretty inexcusable that the Indian Government or private industry hasn’t done anything about this to conserve this waterway. Perhaps they could cremate people and store their ashes in an urn or other container until it can be released at a more sustainable rate.

A very strange way to deal with the dead. Throwing them into a river other people bath in or drink from also due to religious reasons, is frankly super-weird.

Bodies of covid patients? Who is your source, honestly? And not hundreds, it's just a few inquiry of which is going on..most probably a boat accident on the river! Some of the comments said India throws it's dead into rivers.. that's not true! In India dead bodies are burned onto pyres & ashes are sprinkled in Ganges coz it's sacred

Can that river possibly get any more polluted at this point? Yikes!

That’s a shame … don’t forget: this country seems to not have any problem to find money to buy nuclear weapons…..

I read that this has been a problem for this particular river since 1980.

This happens all the time there. In fact that's how they used to dispose of bodies.

For decades the Ganges river has been used to despose of corpses and they will still bath and drink from this sacred river. 🙄
