Centre-left wins Hamburg state elections; Merkel’s CDU slumps

Germany’s centre-left parties consolidated their governing majority in state elections in Hamburg on Sunday. However, support for Angela Merkel’s conservatives dropped to a historic low. The Social Democratic party (SPD) bucked the national trend emerging top with 39% of the vote. The far-right AfD performed poorly, managing to just about cross the 5% hurdle for entry into parliament.
