Scientists accidentally discover the first animal that doesn’t consume oxygen

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have discovered what is believed to be the first ’non-oxygen breathing animal’ according to an article published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The animal is thought to be the first identified that does not have mitochondria—which consume oxygen—and were thought to be present in all animals. The discovery was made by accident.

Interesting, a multicelular organism that "found" an alternative mean to energy production. We already found a jellyfish that don't die, now one "parent" that needs no oxygen. I'm curious about the technology that can result of this on the far away future.

As with many (most?) discoveries: finding something that was not what the researcher was looking for.
