16 million people on lockdown in Italy as cases surge

As the number of COVID-19 cases nears 6000 in Italy, authorities have acted to put Lombardy and 14 provinces in four other regions in a lockdown. This would affect nearly 16 million residents. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country jumped to 5,883 as on Saturday, with the total number of deaths at 233. The unprecedented decree is expected to be in place till at least 3 April.
