Whitehouse downplays COVID-19 threat as stocks tumble

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham likened the coronavirus outbreak to ’a bad flu season’ during a Fox News interview on Monday. Trading opened the week with a 7% drop on the S&P 500 shortly after the opening bell, triggering an automatic ’circuit breaker’ market shutdown to prevent a crash.

Yeah, it's time to move past this downplaying strategy. That made sense a couple weeks ago when the WH didn't want to trigger a panic, but now that panic has ensued anyway it's time to inspire confidence by showing some strong leadership.

Stocks aren't going down bc of Corona. Its Saudi oil prices. But by all means, knee jerk.

This isnt just a "bad flu season" we have oseltamivir to treat the flu and vaccines to help stop the spread and reduce severity. As far as I know we have nothing of the same degree to help with Corona. Until we do it's not "just a bad flu."
