US coronavirus cases surpass 1,000, up nearly ten-fold in a week

The number of US cases of the novel coronavirus has surged past 1,000 on Tuesday — a ten-fold rise within a week. Since March 4, when the number of confirmed cases were just over 100, the virus has spread rapidly from the US epicenter in Washington to across the country in at least 35 states. 38 people have died of the virus in the US with a maximum number of deaths reported in Washington state.
