Pentagon to free up 5 million respirator masks for coronavirus efforts

The Pentagon says it will give 5 million respirator masks and 2,000 ventilators to the Department of Health and Human Services in order to support the coronavirus response. One million of the masks will be made available ’immediately’, said Defense Secretary Mark Esper, adding that the defense department will make 14 certified coronavirus testing labs available to test civilians.

I thought masks didn't work to prevent you from getting it? I know, if you already have it, it helps stop you from getting others sick.

This seems to be a great move. As far as I know, the US doesn't have more patience than it can handle currently, still, having military hospital ships ready is comforting.
