A fossil, discovered in rocks dating to 66.8 to 66.7 million years ago shortly before the demise of nonavian dinosaurs, was determined to be the earliest fossil of a modern bird known so far. It was giving the scientific name of Asteriornis maastrichtensis. It is placed in a close relationship with ducks and chickens and is estimated to have weight about 400g.

It was found by a hobby archeologist. Let’s see what we will still find out about bird evolution through this fossil. Really cool.
