Donald Trump to invoke Defense Production Act to boost fight against coronavirus

In order to boost the fight against the spread of coronavirus, President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he was invoking Defense Production Act. The Act will lead to faster production of equipment needed to fight the spread of the virus.

We may well want to enlist private industry to produce needed equipment such as ventilators, but I am disturbed by the invocation of this act. It seems clearly intended for wartime and defense against an attack. Stretching it to cover an attack by a virus is a worrisome expansion of presidential power. Trump is, of course, just continuing a long line of presidents asserting extra power but past abuses shouldn't excuse new ones -- and we should push Congress to reverse the past excesses, too.

While I understand the urgent need for more equipment such as ventilators, I am disturbed by the use of the Defense Production Act as it clearly wasn't intended to be used to fight a virus. It seems that this is yet one more expansion of presidential power when Congress could easily pass more specific provisions in the bill in process. This is just one more in a long line of presidential expansion of power and Trump is clearly not exceptional in this. But old abuses should be used to excuse new ones. We should object to this one and press Congress to roll back previous ones, too.

Good, hope it's not too late. Every place hit hard experiences shortage of hospitals, protective gear and ventilators. Also, med personnel...

I don’t like Trump but this is something where I don’t want to judge him. I’m not in a position to really judge whether this extreme measure is necessary or not. I hope it turns out well. Extreme situations warrant extreme measures. Let’s hope Trump is listening to good experts and let them do their job.

Governments taking more power all in the name of safety, just like countless other times in history. Powers they never give back to the people, might I add. When will people start realising that governments have used, and always will use these times of fear and desperation in order to pull more power towards them? And when will people start realising that governments are able to do this only because we allow them to? "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be bought at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, almighty God! I do not know what course others might take, but as for me: Give me liberty, or give me death!"

Once this is over he better end it hard, also I think Congress should look into a better way to do this. Not saying the president’s decision is wrong, but I don’t like that it takes “wartime powers” to do it.
