United warns of possible job cuts without federal aid

United Airlines has hinted that major layoffs could be coming if the federal government doesn’t pass an airline bailout by the end of this month. CEO, Oscar Munoz, its president and four union officials said Friday that without federal help, ’our company will begin to take the necessary steps to reduce our payroll’ to match a 60% reduction in flying planned for April.

So after all of the money they blew on stock buy backs, they want more tax payer money to keep enriching themselves and their share holders. They can suck it.

I'm not well versed on economic implications of big corporations going under. I'm wondering what kind of problems there are with letting them go under and having their assets taken up by either other companies or new groups of investors. Reality doesn't work out cleanly, so I know it's much more likely that the big companies just absorb the remains, but I'm genuinely curious to know if there would be drawbacks to spitting up the company among new groups of investors.

I’ll give you 2 to 1 odds they take the money and cut jobs anyway.
