Mexican Senate to vote on proposal to compel Netflix to boost local content

Mexican senators are set to vote Tuesday on a proposal that would force streaming platforms like Netflix Inc and Amazon.com Inc to ensure national content makes up at least 30% of their catalogs. However, Mexico’s Internet Association has warned that the proposal could violate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

I am all for more and better content. I do not understand why the government needs to get involved. An online petition with a million or so Hispanic signatures would've gotten their attention. It seems like something pretty easy these days. Even if the Mexican Senate just started and promoted the effort. Compelling reads to me like, "trying to take control of".
