Trump blasts GM, Ford over ventilators

President Trump slammed GM and Ford on Friday, calling on the automakers to quickly build badly needed ventilators for COVID-19 patients, while suggesting he might invoke the Defense Production Act. ’General Motors MUST immediately open their stupidly abandoned Lordstown plant’, Trump tweeted, adding that the company has gone back on a promise to deliver 40000 ventilators.

Surely any company with the capacity to manufacture ventilators should be jumping at this free PR. "You know, Ford saved my life and the lives of thousands of Americans, they got a lifelong customer in me."

Making ventilators is very different from making cars. If they have the ability to change there production methods, it would take a while, as you have to be careful, a bunch of faulty ventilators could kill hundreds, if not thousands.

I don't think the problem is that GM/Ford are unwilling but that they are unable. Senior people at the company probably volunteered before checking with technical people. Tesla is working with Medtronic and seems to be (claims to be) making progress.

Good, they should be delivering what they promised without needing to be publically called out.
